BankID Signing: When Do You Need It – and When Is a Simpler Signature Enough?

September 10, 2026

Do all documents need to be signed with BankID?

Not necessarily. The right signing method depends on how important it is to verify the signer’s identity, the level of risk associated with the document, and any legal, industry-specific, or internal requirements that apply.

With ECIT Sign, you can choose the signing method that best suits the document – without making the process more complicated than necessary.

What is the difference?

With BankID signing, the signer verifies their identity using an electronic ID. This provides greater assurance about who has actually signed the document and is particularly useful when the signer’s identity needs to be clearly documented.

ECIT Sign offers eID-based signing at the AES level, including BankID and other supported electronic IDs. AES stands for Advanced Electronic Signature and links the signature to an identified individual.

A simpler electronic signature can, for example, be a signature that the recipient writes directly on the screen. In ECIT Sign, this method follows the SES level – Simple Electronic Signature – a simple and flexible option that does not require electronic identification.

When should you choose BankID?

BankID signing is particularly relevant when it is important to know with a high level of certainty who is signing.

It may be suitable for:

·      important customer and supplier agreements

·      documents with financial or legal consequences

·      powers of attorney and other sensitive documents

·      situations where the signer’s identity needs to be documented

·      agreements where clear evidence may be needed later

BankID provides the signer with a familiar and secure experience, while giving the business a stronger basis for linking the signature to the correct person.

When can a simpler signature be enough?

Not every document requires the same level of identity verification.

A simpler signature may be suitable for internal approvals, routine documents, confirmations, or lower-risk agreements – provided there are no specific legal, industry-specific, or internal requirements regarding the signing method.

The advantage is a fast and user-friendly process with fewer steps for the recipient. This can be useful when the parties already know each other or when the document does not require strong electronic identification.

Choose the right security level

Before choosing a signing method, it can be useful to ask four simple questions:

1.        How important is it to verify the signer’s identity?

2.        What could the consequences of an error or misuse be?

3.        Are there any legal, industry-specific, or internal requirements?

4.        How much documentation would we need if the agreement were disputed later?

The higher the risk and the greater the need for secure identification, the more relevant BankID signing becomes.

One solution – multiple signing needs

The main advantage is not necessarily using BankID for every document, but having the flexibility to choose the right method for each situation.

With ECIT Sign, you can combine eID-based signing with simpler signing options in the same solution. You can also track status, use automatic reminders, and maintain an overview of the entire signing process.

BankID when identity is essential. A simpler signature when it is sufficient.

With ECIT Sign, you get the flexibility to balance security, usability, and efficiency – based on the document being signed.
