Signing with Foreign Parties – Without Norwegian BankID

October 19, 2026

The contract is ready. Everyone agrees. But the other party is in Germany, Poland or Brazil, and doesn't have Norwegian BankID.

That's often where things grind to a halt.

The document has to be printed, signed, scanned and sent back. Or you settle for a simple signature, without really knowing who signed it.

With ECIT Sign and Freja eID, foreign parties can sign with a verified identity, just as easily as with BankID.

1. More and more agreements involve a foreign party

This isn't just a concern for large international companies.

It might be a new employee who needs to sign their employment contract before moving to Norway. A board member or investor based abroad. A supplier or customer in another country. Or a Norwegian living overseas who no longer has access to Norwegian BankID.

What they all have in common is that the agreement matters just as much, but signing it becomes more cumbersome.

The more foreign parties you work with, the more time you spend chasing signatures.

2. Paper and scanners take too long

The traditional approach is to email the document and ask the other party to print, sign and scan it.

That often takes days, sometimes weeks. Some people don't have a printer. Others forget. And scanned documents quickly become unreadable or end up in the wrong inbox.

Meanwhile, the agreement is on hold. The new hire can't start, and the investment can't go through.

An agreement only creates value once it's signed.

3. Freja eID provides verified identity without Norwegian BankID

Freja eID is a digital identity approved by the Swedish government and compliant with the EU's regulation on electronic identification (eIDAS).

In many ways it works like BankID, but it doesn't require a Norwegian national identity number or a Norwegian bank account.

The other party can register using a passport from more than 170 countries and territories, or a national ID card from an EU or EEA country.

Signing takes place in a mobile app, using a PIN code or biometrics.

You know who is signing, even when the other party is in another country.

4. Get started in just a few minutes

The other party registers once in the Freja app:

Download the app → take a photo of yourself → scan your passport → read the passport chip with your phone

Freja then verifies the identity. Once approved, the other party can sign with you and with any other service that supports Freja.

A good tip is to let the other party know about Freja a few days before the agreement is due to be signed. That way their identity is ready when the document arrives.

Register once, and the other party is ready to sign.

5. Norwegian and foreign parties in the same document

In ECIT Sign, you choose the signing method for each individual signer.

Those with Norwegian BankID sign with BankID. Those without it sign with Freja eID. Everyone signs the same document, each with their own identity.

You can see who has signed and who hasn't, just like always.

Norwegian board chair → foreign investor → fully signed agreement

One flow, wherever the parties are.

Signing without borders

With ECIT Sign and Freja eID, you can:

  • send agreements to parties in more than 170 countries
  • let foreign parties sign with a verified identity
  • combine BankID and Freja in the same document
  • sign from mobile or desktop
  • track the status of every signature
  • keep all signed documents in one place

It works well for employment contracts, board documents, shareholder agreements, powers of attorney and lease agreements, among others.

How many agreements are waiting for a foreign signature right now?

If you work with foreign employees, owners or partners, you know how long it can take to get every signature in place.

It doesn't have to take more than a few minutes.
